European Safety and Health Week at UPU Industries Ltd

The company thought that the European week for Safety and Health was a project that would be beneficial to the organisation as a whole.

Promoting Health and Safety in October 2001 would be an excellent way to maintain the momentum within the company after being presented with the Queens award for Excellence in Innovation earlier in October.
A supervisor came up with the idea of a suggestion scheme/competition after reading the promotional material sent out from the health and Safety Executive. A project team was formed to raise the profile of safety awareness throughout the organisation. This will be organised as our contribution to European week for Safety and Health.

The suggestion scheme was a great success. The company received 72 suggestions from the 23 staff that were eligible. Suggestions ranged from small basic ideas to complex suggestions with well thought out solutions, consisting of several pages of explanations and diagrams.

Two accident boards have been erected in the company. We took great pains not to associate any rewards with this accident board scheme, as we felt this would lead to an environment were employees would be under pressure not to report accidents or near misses.

All employees have gone through a range of health and safety videos. It is company policy to put new starts through health and safety videos during their induction.

The accident and investigation database is proving very successful it has reduced administration time and costs. Every accident gets investigated and the employees expect this investigation to take place. This data will help us plot trends and avoid danger areas developing.

Senior management are very encouraged with the response for the safety the safety week and can see that the safey week at FARMERS will continue to enhance the working environment over several months as we continue to implement the ideas put forward in the suggestion scheme. Employees will see their ideas incorporated into their own working environment, thus benefiting all the staff at FARMERS. During this implementation process input and feedback will take place, involving all levels of staff, leading to ownership and high morale.
